Operations at the Port of Mackay began in the 1930s. Nearly a century later, its fuel line supports are aged and eroded after years of weathering tropical storms. North Queensland Bulk Ports (NQBP) brought Wisely in to deliver an essential upgrade.
NQBP manages port activities within the Port of Mackay. Its assets include Wharf 1, which is predominantly used for liquid bulk import. Liquid bulk is typically stored approximately 1.5km from Wharf 1 and transferred through above ground fuel lines that run along the harbour side of the Mackay middle breakwater. Approximately 500m of the lines are supported by plinths that are found on the breakwater slope or below the existing operations building.
These supports have reached the end of their working life due to extensive corrosion in the steel supports cast, concrete delamination and spalling, and insufficient founding material. NQBP has engaged Wisely to relocate the existing lines and services to the south of Harbour Road and bury the lines and services in a service trench, without impacting existing operations.
This project also involves the development of new fuel lines and services along a corridor to the south of Harbour Road. The outcome will leave the existing support plinths along this section obsolete with no infrastructure reliance.

- New pipe and service support plinths
- Installation of three new pipelines and connection to existing
- Installation of a new section of fire main and connection to existing
- Installation of a potable water line and connection to existing
- New electrical cabling and connection to existing lines and switchboards
- Installation of instrumentation and monitoring
- Reinstatement of the existing pavement.
