Constructed in the late 1860s and reconstructed and extended between the 1880s and 1950s, Bowen Wharf is one of North Queensland’s oldest and most historically significant port structures. The heritage-listed wharf is owned by North Queensland Bulk Ports (NQBP) and supports towage operations for the Port of Abbot Point. It remains open to the public today and is deeply valued by the community. Bowen Wharf’s timber piles, girders, corbels, decking and railway rails have exceptional local and historical significance.
As part of its ongoing maintenance and preservation program, NQBP engaged Wisely to deliver essential repairs and like-for-like replacements to key components of the timber superstructure.
Wisely provided services including:
- Replacement and repair of deteriorated girders, corbels, decking, deck furniture and cross-beams
- Installation of new edge girders and vehicle kerbs
- Strengthening of designated upgrade zones.
Given the deteriorated state of the wharf, the works were delivered under strict load-bearing constraints. Wisely developed and deployed specialised lifting jigs and transport mechanisms to safely remove and install heavy timber elements while ensuring weight distribution remained within maximum limits. All materials were carefully sourced to meet heritage requirements, with timber supplied from Mackay and other components procured locally in Bowen.
Through meticulous planning, heritage-sensitive construction techniques and close collaboration with the Superintendent, Wisely successfully preserved the structural and historical integrity of Bowen Wharf. The project maintained public access, safeguarded an important community asset and ensured the wharf’s continued role in supporting Abbot Point’s towage operations.
